Black and Silver Embroidered Medallion on Silk Ribbon
designed byCynthia Kimura
Approximate Size20 1/2 Inches
I'm always on the lookout for beautiful buttons to act as the center of my bead embroidery.
Mysterious and captivating colors combine in this wondrous necklace design. Cynthia used Designer Blends from the Artbeads Designer Series to create the perfect bead embroidered backdrop for her Czech glass button focal. Silk ribbon in sultry nighttime colors complete this look, perfect for an evening out
Use 5-minute two-part epoxy to glue the Czech glass 32mm round triple heart leaf jet with platinum paint button to a piece of bead backing and allow to dry.
Using Swarovski 4mm round pearls in Dark Grey, create a two-seed-bead backstitch around the button. Create another row of two-seed-bead-backstitch around the button using white pearls from the Swarovski 3mm Crystal Mix Black Tie Designer Blend. Create a third and final row of two-seed-bead backstitch using 8/0 seed beads from the Artbeads Graphite Gray Designer Blend.
Trim the backing, making sure not to cut any of the threads sewn into the piece. Then, cut another piece of backing to match your focal. Attach the backing with a row of gunmetal seed beads using the brick stitch technique.
Glue the Angel Findings antique pewter elongated floral glue-on bail to the back of your focal using the epoxy and allow to dry.
Cut a length of jewelry wire approximately 23 inches long. Slide a sterling silver 2x2mm crimp tube onto one end, followed by a sterling silver 6.10mm open jump ring. Bring the wire back through the crimp tube and crimp in place. Hide the tube with a sterling silver 3mm crimp cover.
String on a random pattern of seed beads, beads from the Swarovski 4mm Crystal Mix Black Tie Designer Blend, and TierraCast rhodium Kenyan heishi spacers. For reference, Cynthia added 9-15 seed beads together, followed by either a pattern of one 4mm bicone, a spacer, a 4mm pearl, a spacer, and a 4mm bicone, or a pattern of two 4mm bicones, a spacer, a 4mm pearl, a spacer, and two 4mm bicones. Continue until your strand is the desired length.
Slide a 4x4mm sterling silver crimp tube onto the end of a hand-dyed black, steel gray, and dove gray blend silk ribbon. Then, slide the ribbon end through the jump ring on one end of your beaded strand. Bring the ribbon end back through the crimp tube and flatten the crimp tube to secure the ribbon to the jump ring. Slide your pendant onto both strands. Add a 4mm crimp tube to the end of the ribbon, slide it through the jump ring on the other end of the beaded strand and then back through the crimp tube and flatten the tube to secure the ribbon on this end.
Attach half of the antique silver-plated pewter round floral design toggle clasp to each jump ring on the ends of the necklace.

Nice choice! All or most of the products needed for this project are shown
below with quantities. Sometimes we sell out of components and aren’t able to order more from
the manufacturer (we know, it is very disappointing to us, too). Use the opportunity to mix up
the design and make it yours by substituting similar products or altering the entire color
scheme—it’s up to you!
