| Meet Sarah and Sammy Spider. Our, oh so delightful, not so frightful beaded spiders.
We chose traditional orange and black for Halloween, but you can get creative and use any color combination of felt and beads you wish for your spider species.
A couple of notes before you start:
Give thought to the location of the holes in the felt beads before you glue the head to the body. Use the larger felt bead for the body. The wire for the legs goes through the hole in the felt bead. Use the smaller felt bead for the head. The eyes are placed near the holes in the felt bead to help conceal them.
General Sewing:
The decorative beads are stitched onto the felt beads as you would sew on buttons. With a needle, knot and stitch a thread to the felt bead where you want your first decorative bead to be. Thread the needle through a larger decorative bead, through a seed bead and then back through the first bead. Catch the felt underneath the decorative bead with your needle and tie a knot. Run the needle through the felt bead and come out where you want your next decorative bead to be. Repeat sewing beads.
Black spider
Step one: Glue the head (20mm black felt bead) to the body (35mm black felt bead) using Quick Hold craft glue. Let dry.
Step two: Sew the decorative beads to the felt spider as described above, using any combination of beads for a colorful, festive look
Step three: Cut four 9-inch pieces of 22 gauge black artistic wire for the spiders legs. Run the wires through the hole in the body. To make it easier, wrap all four pieces together with a piece of tape on one end. To keep the legs in place, place a dab of glue in the hole of the body and let dry. Remove tape. On one side of the spider, bend all four legs up with a pair of pliers. Fan the legs out. On one leg, thread ten 11/0 matte charcoal Toho beads, one 11/0 frosted silver-lined medium orange Toho bead and one 4mm silver-lined peridot magatama Toho bead. Bend the wire leg down and thread one more orange Toho bead and thirty-four more matte charcoal Toho beads. Trim the wire leg to 3/8 inch and bend and curl the wire with a pair of pliers to form feet. Repeat for all the legs.
Orange Spider
Step four: Glue the head (10mm orange felt bead) to the body (20mm orange felt bead)
using Quick Hold craft glue. Let dry.
Step five: Sew the decorative beads to the felt spider as described above, using any combination of beads for a colorful, festive look
Step six: Follow directions in step three for making the legs using beads as follows:
On one leg thread ten 11/0 matte opaque sour apple round Toho beads, two 11/0 silver-lined medium orange round Toho beads and one 11/0 matte charcoal round Toho bead.
Bend the wire leg down and thread two more orange Toho beads and twenty-five more matte charcoal Toho beads. Trim the wire leg to 3/8 inch and bend and curl the wire with a pair of pliers to form feet. Repeat for all the legs.
