The combination of the ornate butterfly pendant with gorgeous Swarovski crystals and edgy gunmetal components results in a dramatic necklace full of warmth and movement. For a complete look, wear this necklace with its matching earrings. For free design instructions for the Papillon earrings, please click here.
Step one: Create the 4mm fire opal drops by attaching each of the 12 faceted rounds to a 1.5-inch gunmetal-plated 23 gauge head pin and finish with simple loops. Attach the 6 Swarovski 6mm hyacinth faceted rounds to head pins and finish with simple loops. Then attach each of the four jet faceted rounds to its own head pin, followed by a 6mm sand opal crystal cube and finish the drops with simple loops.
Step two: Place the black onyx butterfly pendant on your 20 gauge gunmetal eye pin, followed by the 8mm sand opal roundelle and the 4mm hyacinth faceted round. Finish this eye pin with a simple loop. Attach the 4mm hyacinth faceted round to another gunmetal-plated head pin and finish with a simple loop. Slightly open the loop of this drop, attach it to the loop on the bottom of your head pin, and reclose the loop.
Step three: Cut the length of gunmetal-plated twist link chain that you desire for your necklace. For our necklace, we prepared approximately 18 inches of chain (22 links). Set aside the remainder of your chain for the earrings.
Step four: Find the center point of the chain. For us the center point fell between the 11th and 12th links. Slightly open the loop at the top of the black onyx butterfly pendant drop, attach it to the center loop between the chain links, and close the loop.
Step five: Moving away from the center of the necklace, attach two fire opal drop and one hyacinth drop to the center loop between the next two links. Attach the sand opal drop between the next two links, and repeat this pattern two more times with the faceted round drops; separated by another sand opal drop. Repeat this entire pattern on the other side of the butterfly pendant drop.
Step six: On one end of the necklace, attach the gunmetal-plated trigger clasp using a 21 gauge open jump ring. On the other end, attach another open jump ring. For more information on opening and closing jump rings, view this handy tip video.
