Old Rugged Cross Necklace Instructions Designed by Teri McCamish
Like the layers of work on display, this necklace reveals layers of meaning. The rusted iron cross stands out as a symbol everyone can recognize, but the matte brown seed beads and sweet beaded blooms more subtly represent the dogwood, a tree with deep biblical connotations. Wear this necklace for the meaning behind it and to show the devotion and care that went into making it.
Step one: Refer to our Tubular Herringbone PDF Diagram to create the rope for your necklace using the TOHO 8/0 bead rounds in matte opaque brown. Our rope is approximately 26 inches long and one 8 gram package of 8/0 TOHOs yields approximately six inches of herringbone rope. Sew the end rows of your rope together using the brick stitch.
Step two: Attach the Lipstick Ranch rusted iron fancy cross with cut-out heart pendant to the center of your rope by creating a beaded bail with the Miyuki 11/0 opaque matte espresso bean Delicas. We made three loops for our beaded bail, with approximately 41 Delicas on each loop.
Step three: Cut a foot-long piece of wire and fold it in half. Add six Miyuki transparent rainbow light gold matte 3.4mm drop fringe seed beads to the wire. Pull the wire ends tight to make a loop of drop fringe beads. Twist the wire two times and add six drop fringe beads to each end of the wire. Loop these beads around the loop you already created and twist both ends together in the back of the center of the beaded bud. Position the ends of the wire to point in opposite directions. Add a Dakota Stones cherry quartz 12mm coin bead to each end of the wire. Push the bead down toward the drop fringe beads and fold the rest of the wire over the back half of the bead. Do this for both ends of the wir and twist the ends together in the center of the flower. Position the ends in opposite directions perpendicular to the cherry quartz beads. Add a cherry quartz bead to each end, fold the wire over the back half of the bead and twist the wire together again. Repeat this step six times for a total of seven flowers.
Step four: Attach the flowers in random places of your rope by working the wire ends into the herringbone tube. Add Miyuki transparent lime green silver-lined 3.4mm drop fringe seed beads in random places around the flowers by weaving them into the herringbone rope.
