Vespertilio Instructions Designed by Cheri Carlson
Our Vespertilio necklace features "the little evening one" it's named after — a dramatic black bat! Layers of leather, rivets, chain and gleaming Swarovski crystals create a stunning look of dark grandeur. Wear this necklace on an evening out for nocturnal elegance everyone will notice!
Creating the Leather Pieces and the Crystal Dangles
Step one: Follow page one of the template included in this PDF to draw the bat and medallions onto the 2x8.5inch tooling leather wrist blank. There's enough leather to make extra medallions in case the first few don't turn out the way you like. If you wish to have an extra bat, you will need to purchase a second piece of leather. Use our heavy-duty shears to cut out the bat and medallions. A fine utility blade is helpful when cutting around the tight spots of the bat's head.
Step two: Once your bat is cut out, use a smooth, pointed object to score design lines on the bat. You can use an awl, an inkless ball point pen, a small nail head, the tips of round nose pliers or something similar for this. Now you want to create texture and convex shaping on the wings and body of your bat. To do this, hammer and burnish (rub) the leather using a ball pein hammer and a bench block. To shape the ears, we used the end of a small paint brush.
Step three: Use a leather edge beveler to bevel the bottom edges of the bat. See how to use a leather edge beveler with this video. Leave the top edges of the bat plain. Use the small hole size on the rotary hole punch to punch holes for the eyelets you will be adding later. You will place an eyelet at the top center point of each wing and an eyelet at the bottom center point of each wing. Set the bat aside for now.
Step four: Texture your medallions with the ball pein hammer. Then punch holes in the medallions, following these instructions:
Large Bat Medallion: Use the small hole punch in the center of the medallion.
Five Medium Medallions: Use the small hole punch in the center of each medallion. One of these medallions will be layered in the center of the 3-piece medallion.
3-piece medallion: Use the largest hole punch in the center of the small flanking circles. You may have to open up this hole even more when adding the rivets later. No hole punch is necessary in the center of the largest circle.
The texturing can enlarge the circles, so trim them down if necessary. Lay a medium medallion in the center of the 3-piece medallion, along with a TierraCast black finish pewter SS34 glue-in embellishment on top to make sure they all fit well together. Trim the medium medallion or the 3-piece medallion as is necessary.
Step five: Using the leather medallions as your templates, cut a piece of bead backing for four of the medium medallions. Then, cut a piece of bead backing to fit one of the TierraCast glue-ins. Set these aside.
Step six: Dye all of the leather pieces black. See our Applying Leather Dye Handy Tip for more help with this process. You want to make sure to dye all of the edges and backs of the pieces, as well. We added about three coats of dye to each piece, to make sure the coloring was even. Allow to dry.
Step seven: You are now going to create crystal dangles for your necklace. Thread a Swarovski 4mm faceted round in Jet Hematite onto a TierraCast 2-inch 20 gauge black finish pewter head pin and finish with a simple loop. For help making simple loops, please see our Handy Tip. Repeat five times for a total of six dangles and set them aside.
Assembling the Bat:
Step one: Use an eyelet setter and anvil to set four TierraCast 3.7mm black finish pewter eyelets into the holes you punched in the bat. Setting eyelets is similar to setting rivets.
Step two: Now you are going to embellish the large medallion that will go on the center of the bat. Use a TierraCast 4mm silver-plated pewter rivet, a rivet setter and a bench block to attach a TierraCast glue-in to the center of the leather. Use the small size on the hole punch to punch eight holes around the perimeter of the leather. Add a rivet to each hole punched.
Step three: To make a link for this medallion, use a 2-inch matte black-plated 20 gauge eye pin and make it to length, or so that the loops stick out just beyond the edge of the leather circle. Make a simple loop at the other end of the eye pin. Use a small amount of E6000 to attach the eye pin to the back of the large bat medallion at approximately 10:00 and 2:00 positions. The openings of the loops should be facing up. Allow to dry. Use E6000adhesive to glue a Swarovski SS34 XILION rose enhanced flatback in Jet Hematite into the TierraCast glue-in on the large medallion. Allow to dry.
Step four: Cut a piece of the 4x2.5mm matte black-plated crimped ovals chain 12 links long. Attach one end of the chain to one of the eye pin loops on the large bat medallion. Repeat for the other loop of the eye pin. Then, use Super New Glue to attach this medallion to the center of the bat. Make sure to keep the chain free for attaching to other components.
Step five: Attach a 6mm matte black-plated 21 gauge open jump ring to one of the eyelets on the top of your bat. For help opening the jump rings, please see our Jump Ring Handy Tip Video. While the jump ring is still open, slip the 11th link of the chain attached to the large bat medallion onto the jump ring, leaving one link dangling. Close the jump ring. Attach one of the crystal dangles you made earlier to the free, dangling 12th link. Repeat for the other side of the bat. Attach two jump rings to each of the eyelets along the bottom of the bat and then set the bat aside.
For the 3-Piece Medallion:
Step one: Use a rivet to attach a TierraCast black finish pewter 8 point embellishment to the center of one of the individual medium medallions. Then, use Super New Glue to attach it to the center of the 3-piece medallion.
Step two: Make an eye pin link to be attached behind one of the TierraCast glue-ins. The eye pin will be sandwiched between the rivet back and behind the glue-in. To do this, make your simple loops on each eye pin large enough to fit around the tube of the rivet you will be adding behind the glue-in. Now, layer a rivet back, the eye pin link, a glue-in and a rivet head and rivet all of these components together. Repeat this step.
Step three: Use Super New Glue to attach these glue-ins to each of the flanking circles on the 3-piece medallion, making sure the openings of the loops on the eye pins are facing down. Make sure to keep the loops of the eye pins free, as you will need to open and close them to attach chain later. Use E6000 adhesive to add a Jet Hematite flatback to each of the glue-ins. Allow to dry.
For the Remaining Leather Medallions:
Step one: Use a rivet to attach an 8-point embellishment to the center of one of the medium medallions. Repeat this for the remaining three medallions. Make two eye pin links for each of the four individual medium medallions. Use E6000 to attach the eye pin links to the medallions. For each medallion, position one of the links at approximately 10:00 and 2:00 positions and the other eye pin at approximately 4:00 and 8:00 positions. Make sure the openings on the loops are facing each other, toward the center of the medallion. Allow to dry.
Step two: Use Super New Glue to glue the bead backings to each of them. Make sure to keep the loops of the eye pins free, as you will need to open and close them to attach the chain.
For the Remaining Glue-in Medallion:
Step one: Make one eye pin link for the glue-in. Use E6000 to attach the link to the back of the glue-in at approximately 10:00 and 2:00 positions. Allow to dry. Use Super New Glue to attach the bead backing to the back of the glue-in. Glue a Jet Hematite flatback to the front of the glue-in and allow to dry.
Assembling the Necklace:
Step one: Cut the following lengths of chain:
Four 2-link pieces
Two 3-link pieces
Two 5-link pieces
One 7-link piece
Two 8-link pieces
Two 9-link pieces
One 11-link piece
One 23-link piece
One 27-link piece
The following steps will lay out how to connect the chain, bat and medallions so that you are only opening each eye pin once, which will lessen your risk of breaking them.
Step two: Using page two of this PDF Diagram of the finished necklace as a guide, link the components together in this order:
Open loop M1b and add the 23-link chain and then one 2-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 2-link chain to jump ring B1b. Connect the other end of the 23-link chain to loop M2a, add a 2-link chain to M2a and then close the loop. Connect the other end of the 2-link chain to jump ring B2a.
Open loop M1a and add a 2-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the chain to jump ring B1a.
Open loop M2b and add a 2-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the chain to jump ring B2b.
Open loop M1d and add a 3-link chain, the 27-link chain and a crystal dangle. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 3-link chain to loop M3a. Open loop M3b and add a 3-link chain, then connect the other end of it to loop M2c; add the other end of the 27-link chain and a crystal dangle to M2c. Close the loop.
Open loop M1c and add a 9-link chain and an 8-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 8-link chain to loop M4b and then close the loop. Connect the other end of the 9-link chain to loop M4a and then close the loop.
Open loop M2d and add the other 9-link chain and the other 8-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 8-link chain to M5a and close the loop. Add the other end of the 9-link chain to M5b and close the loop.
Open loop M4d and add the 7-link chain and the 11-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 7-link chain to loop M5c and then add the other end of the 11-link chain to the same loop. Close the loop.
Open loop M4c and add a crystal dangle and a 5-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 5-link chain to loop M6a. Close the loop.
Open loop M5d and add a crystal dangle and a 5-link chain. Close the loop. Connect the other end of the 5-link chain to M6b. Close the loop.
Step three: Cut the remaining chain in half. Attach one end of one length of chain to an existing jump ring on the top of the bat. Add another jump ring to the other end of the chain. Repeat for the other side of the bat, only this time use a jump ring to add the 9x5mm matte black-plated trigger clasp to the end of the chain. Adjust the length of the necklace if necessary.
