The Metamorphosis necklace uses butterflies along with locks and keys to symbolize change. As a tribute to that theme, the design brings together both the past and the present. While the look of the necklace is modern, antique brass components and retro copper beads add a vintage touch.
Step one: Cut a 2 1/2-inch piece of 22-gauge half hard sterling silver wire. Create a simple loop at one end of the wire and attach it to a 1.25-inch TierraCast® black finish pewter radiant ring. Thread the blue and orange butterfly retro copper coin bead onto the wire. Use a simple loop to attach the wire to the bottom of the radiant ring. Add a 5.5mm antique brass-plated 21-gauge open jump ring to each simple loop. Repeat this step for the heart lock retro copper coin bead. You have just created two links.
Step two: Use an 8mm antique brass-plated open jump ring to attach the antique brass intricate scroll closed loop bail to the 41x22mm antique brass European key pendant. Attach the antique brass chevron pinch bail to the Swarovski 6754 18mm butterfly pendant in Crystal Golden Shadow. Set these items aside. Cut two 7 1/2-inch pieces of antique brass-plated twisted double link with rollo links curb chain using side cutters.
Step three: Attach the key piece of the TierraCast® brass oxide pewter lock and key toggle clasp to the top link of one curb chain using an 8mm jump ring. Attach a 4-inch piece of ZambaPro™ 49 .019 jewelry wire to the last link of the chain using a 14K/20 gold-filled 2x2mm crimp tube. For help using crimp tubes, visit the Handy Tips section of the Learning Center.
Step four: String the following beads onto the wire: a Swarovski 3mm faceted round in Padparadscha and a Swarovski 6mm round pearl with a Tahitian look. Repeat two more times. Add a Padparadscha round. Use a crimp tube to attach the wire to the top jump ring of the copper butterfly link that you created in Step one.
Step five: Repeat steps three and four (substituting the lock toggle piece and the copper heart lock link) to create the remaining side of the necklace.
Step five: Attach a 6-inch piece of jewelry wire to the bottom jump ring of the copper butterfly link using a crimp tube. String the following beads onto the wire in an alternating pattern: eight Padparadscha rounds and seven pearls.
Step six: Slide the key pendant's bail over the strand of beads that you just made. Attach the strand to the bottom jump ring of the copper heart lock link using a crimp tube. Add the crystal butterfly pendant's bail to the same jump ring.
