Metropolis Necklace Instructions Designed by Artbeads
Like the iconic silent film it's named for, this necklace is full of art deco style. Geometric patterns combine with metallic hues to create a design that is at once futuristic and reminiscent of the bygone Jazz Age. You'll love showing off this beaded beauty at parties, formal events or even at the office!
Step one: Use gilders paste on the Kabela Design antique brass ruffled link and allow it to dry. See our Handy Tip for more information on how to use gilders paste.
Step two: On a piece of Lacy's Stiff Stuff, plan out where the center of your bib is going to be by drawing a line about 1 1/2 inches long. Sew the link onto the stiff stuff centered and at the top of this line. Start your pattern of beads by sewing the Swarovski 9mm and 12.5mm pendular lochrose sew-ons in Jet Hematite on to the Stiff Stuff around the link. All of the beads will be sewn on to the Lacy's Stiff Stuff. For the Swarovski sew-ons, you may want to pass your thread through the stringing hole a few times for a secure hold. Use the pictures of this design as your guide when sewing on your beads, or create your own unique pattern!
Step two: Keep working out from the center line, adding the TOHO 3mm bead bugles in silver-lined light gold, along with the TOHO 9mm bead bugles in matte gun metal and the TOHO 8/0 bead rounds in matte black. The 3mm gold bugles will be sewn on individually, but the 9mm gun metal bugles and the matte black TOHOs will be strung on your thread together in patterns of three 9mm gun metal bugles together, two 9mm gun metal bugles and a matte black TOHO together and one 9mm gun metal bugle and two matte black TOHOs together.
Step three: As you continue to work outward from the center line, the TOHO 3mm bead bugles in metallic hematite will be sewn on in groups of four, three, two and one in descending order. Add the TOHO 9mm bead twisted bugles in silver-lined light gold to create the tiered shape of the bib. Again, the pictures we have provided will guide you on how to place your beads.
Step four: Once you have finished the pattern for the bib, cut the Stiff Stuff around the pattern, leaving some extra Stiff Stuff around the pattern to sew on fringe and a border.
Step five: Position your needle and thread underneath the bottom-most Swarovski sew-on and bring the needle through the Stiff Stuff so that the thread is coming out of the front side of the bib. String on seven metallic hematite bugles and one Miyuki 15/0 metallic rainbow light bronze/violet hex cut Delica. Once those beads are on your thread, take your needle back up through all of the bugles and secure the piece of fringe to your bib. Repeat two more times to create three pieces of fringe under the Swarovski sew-on.
Step six: Create 14 more pieces of fringe like the one in step five for the bottom tier of your bib. Seven pieces of fringe should be sewn on to the left of the bottom-most sew-on and seven pieces should be sewn on to the right.
Step seven: Create a backing for your bib out of a soft, dark fabric. Make sure the fabric is not woven, so that it doesn't fray and sew it on to the back of your bib. On all edges of the bib but the top edge, sew on a border of TOHO 11/0 bead rounds in opaque shiny jet black. These beads will be sewn on individually and make sure you use enough beads to cover all the showing edges of the Stiff Stuff and the backing fabric.
Step eight: Cut the satin Hamilton gold-plated twisted double link with rolo links curb chain about 18 inches long or about 78 links long. Sew the top edge of the bib to the middle of the chain. It should be sewn on to about 18 links. We sewed every other link to the Stiff Stuff and made several loops with our thread for a secure hold.
Step nine: Attach the 9x5mm satin Hamilton gold-plated trigger clasp to one end of the chain with the help of a 5.5mm satin Hamilton gold-plated 20 gauge open jump ring. For more information on using jump rings, see our Handy Tip. Attach another jump ring to the other end of the chain and your necklace is complete.
