Artbeads Jewelry Design Star Spotlight

Congratulations to Karissa Martindale!

Jewelry Design Star Karissa Martindale is somewhat of a renaissance gal. This software engineer makes jewelry in the evening, and has been since December 2012. "I like to say I 'Code by Day and Craft by Night.' That's why when I opened my Etsy shop, I could think of no better name than Craft by Night", she explained. Karissa taught herself to make jewelry by reading books, videos, and even just examining a piece to figure out how it was put together—that must be the engineer in her! She soon started making jewelry for her friends and family and before long she realized that she could sell her pieces! Although she enjoys working with different media, Karissa loves the allure of beads: "If I have to choose a favorite (which is hard), it would have to be beading. I think it's because beads can become anything: necklace, bracelet, earrings, etc". In fact, her favorite design that she's made is the winning bib necklace that uses mint green beads! Besides her beady pieces, Karissa specializes in wire work and likes to make custom initial rings. "It's nice to be recognized for my other pieces and abilities. It lets me know I'm on the right track. I'm young and I'm looking forward to all the endless possibilities that are jewelry". Check out Karissa's works in progress on her Facebook page and be sure to stop by her Etsy store!

Here's what Karissa had to say about her winning design:'This bib necklace is made of genuine gem stones so it has a bit of weight to it giving it a more expensive feel than its plastic competitors. Itís tied in the back with a burgundy silk ribbon which perfectly compliments the stones.

The ribbon could also be switched out. Itís simply hooked though the rings allowing for customization.

I decided to create this piece after seeing the bib necklaces that have come into style lately. I wanted something that looked great without being made of plastic. I found these mint green drops in a whole sale shop in NYC and fell in love. After a few design revisions I ended up with this mint green bib necklace with smokey grey accents. '
