Beaded Tube Crochet Handy Tip

To create a crocheted bracelet, you'll need:

Fine or Extra Fine crochet thread in size 20 or 30
A thin beading needle for stringing beads
A size 10 crochet hook
1-2 8g bags of size 8/0 TOHO seed beads (depending on your wrist size)
24 Gauge Silver Non-Tarnish Artistic Wire or two Headpins
2 jewelry cones or bead caps approximately 9.5mm in width

For this Handy Tip, we used yarn and pony beads to create a pattern with three colors so that everything is easy to see. You may want to practice with pony beads and a large crochet hook as well until you become familiar with the stitch.

Forming the Base

Step One:

String all of the beads that you will use for this project onto your thread. Once you start your design, you will not be able to add extra beads.

Step 1
Step 1

Step Two:

Form a slip knot at the end of the crochet thread. Insert the crochet hook through the loop. Grab the thread with crochet hook and pull it through the loop to form a chain stitch. Create 5 more chain stitches.

Step Three:

Insert your crochet hook through the first chain stitch that you made. Pull the thread through that stitch and through the loop on your crochet hook. This will create a ring.

Step Four:

Insert your crochet hook into the next chain stitch on the ring. Push a bead along the thread until it rests near the ring. Grab the thread just behind the bead with your crochet hook and pull the thread through the chain stitch and the loop on your crochet hook.

Step Five:

Repeat Step four until your ring has five beads attached to it.

Working from the Base

Step Six:

Insert your crochet hook into the loop under the first bead. Bring you thread from the right side of your bead across the front of your bead and to the left. Push a new bead along your thread until it rests near the first bead. Grab the thread just behind the new bead with your crochet hook and pull it through the loop under the first bead and the loop on your crochet hook. This is called a slip stitch.

Step Seven:

Repeat Step Six with the remaining four beads on your ring.

Step Eight:

Repeat steps six through seven until the bracelet reaches the length you desire. If you are doing the stitch correctly, beads strung with a pattern of three colors will create a spiral effect.

Finishing the End

Step Nine:

Insert your crochet hook into the loop under the first bead of your last row. Bring your thread from the right side of your bead across the front of your bead and to the left. Grab the thread with your crochet hook and pull it through the loop under the first bead and the loop on your crochet hook. Repeat for the remaining beads in the row.

Step Ten:

Make the loop on your crochet hook approximately 3 inches long. Remove your crochet hook from the loop and cut the center of your loop. Pull away the excess thread and tighten the remaining thread piece.

Attaching a Clasp

We finished our bracelet with two 9.5mm cones. You can use bead caps if you prefer.

Step Eleven:

Begin creating a wrapped loop with your wire. Open the loop and slide it through several of the threads at the end of your crocheted tube. Finish the wrapped loop.

Step 11
Step 11

Step Twelve:

Thread a cone onto the wire so that it is covering the end of the bracelet.

Step 12
Step 12

Step Thirteen:

Use another wrapped loop to attach your clasp just above the cone.

Step 13
Step 13

Step Fourteen:

Repeat steps eleven through thirteen for the other end of the bracelet.

An 8g bag of Size 8/0 Toho seed beads with a size 10 crochet hook will make approximately 5 inches of cord, enough for one bracelet once a clasp is added. Those with larger wrists may need two bags to complete their design.
