Feathered Glory Necklace Instructions Designed by Cynthia Kimura
A feathered style is achieved in this necklace thanks to the unique bead embroidery techniques Cynthia applied. She was inspired by the book Textured Bead Embroidery by Linda Landy. This book will show you different ways to add even more texture and dimension to your beaded designs. Take a look through the book and then make this necklace to get started adding texture to your jewelry!
Step one: Glue the Lillypilly Designs 32mm tab shell celadon bird with flowers square cabochon onto a piece of bead backing. Allow to dry. Create a frame of TOHO 11/0 matte nickel-plated bronze/plum iris bead rounds around the cabochon using the two-seed-bead backstitch.
Step two: Sew nine Czech glass chocolate brown dagger beads around the top left corner of the focal, just above and around the row of seed beads framing the cabochon. Repeat for the bottom right corner of the focal.
Step three: Add a second row of beads to the seed bead frame using the peyote stitch bezel technique. Use 11/0 TOHOs for this row, until you come to the start of the large brown dagger beads. In this section you will use the Czech glass lime green and turquoise dagger beads for every other bead. We used five dagger beads for each corner and they layered nicely with the bigger dagger beads. You can go back through all of the beads with your thread to secure them even more.
Step four: Trim the bead backing , making sure not to cut any of the stitches you made. Glue your focal onto a piece of Lillypilly Designs 4x8.5-inch plain brownstone Ultrasuede. Allow to dry. Trim the suede so that it is the same shape as the bead backing, then finish the edges with 11/0 TOHOs using the brick stitch technique.
Step five: Cut a length of 5x4.5mm antique brass-plated flat cable chain approximately 9 1/2-inches long. Attach half of the TierraCast brass oxide pewter large leaf toggle clasp set to one end using a 5.5mm antique brass-plated 21 gauge open jump ring. For help opening and closing jump rings, please see our Handy Tip Video. Repeat this step with the other half of the toggle clasp set. Sew the ends of the chain to the sides of the top of the pendant so that the focal lies at the center of the necklace.
