Durango Bracelet Instructions Designed by Cheri Carlson
Gemstones and leather combine in this earthy beauty! You'll love the rugged look of this wide leather cuff. The blocky blue crazy lace agate beads and the silvery snaps and faceted rounds add a modern flair to this classic design. Dive into this design to learn more about leather crafting!
Step one: Use a tooling leather 1x8.5-inch wrist blank for the foundation of your bracelet. Once the bracelet is finished, it measures at seven inches, with a one-inch overlap for the snap closure. If you need a longer length, you can cut a longer strip from the tooling leather 6x9 2/3 0z sheet. You could also punch a hole and use jump rings to make the closure any length you need instead of using snaps.
Step two: Dye the leather strip and allow to dry. For help with dyeing leather, please see our Applying Leather Dye Handy Tip. You can speed up the dry time by using a hair dryer on the leather.
Step three: Use a leather groover to create a groove around the border of your leather strip. Watch this video to see how to use a leather groover. Make sure you consider where you will be placing your snap closure when making the groove. You don't want the snap to overlap where the stitching will be.
Step four: Use a 4-prong lacing chisel to make the holes for the stitching in the grooves that run down the length of the bracelet. Watch this video to learn how to use the 4-prong lacing chisel. Use the 1-prong lacing chisel to make three holes in the grooves on either end of the strip. You can watch this video to see the 1-prong lacing chisel in action.
Step five: Use a leather edge beveler to bevel the front and back of all of the edges of your leather strip. This will give your bracelet nice finished edges. To learn how to use the leather edge beveler, watch this video.
Step six: Cut approximately five feet of The BeadSmith .8mm neon blue Chinese knotting cord. Follow the basic leather threading technique in this PDF diagram. You will use two needles for this technique. We used the carpet and sails needle from the multi-purpose assorted beading and more needle kit. Start and end the cord at the end of the bracelet where the bottom of the snap will be. Knot the cord on the back of the leather strip and weave through a few of the stitches to secure the cord. Trim and use fabric cement on the knot to secure it.
Step seven: Use a snap set from the Tandy Leather Easy to Do line 24 snaps and setter pack and attach it to the ends of your bracelet. For help with setting snaps in leather, please see our Handy Tip. Use adhesive to cover the front of the snap with the TierraCast antique pewter rock and roll leather snap cap and allow to dry.
Step eight: Close your bracelet and estimate where the center front should be. Make a faint mark with a pencil to mark this position. Open the bracelet and lay it flat. Lay out the center section of beads on the strip. This center section consists of one Nunn Design antique silver-plated pewter faceted 6mm round bead, three Dakota Stones blue crazy lace agate 6mm cube beads, and one more faceted round bead. Make a faint pencil mark where the beads end. Use your 1-prong chisel to make two holes at each end of the bead pattern. Space these holes as same as the holes around the edges of the bracelet.
Step nine: Place the center section of beads on the strip again. Make a faint pencil mark on each side of the center cube bead. Use the 1-prong chisel to make a hole on each mark. These holes will be perpendicular to previous holes made. You will use these holes to tighten up stitching on the back of the bracelet later.
Step ten: Place the next section of beads on the strip. It will be the same bead pattern from step eight. They should be next to the two holes made at the end of the center bead section, so you only have to mark one end of the section. Use the 4-prong chisel to make four holes at the end of these beads. Make two perpendicular holes for the center bead of this section, just as you did in step nine. Repeat this step on the other side of the center section.
Step eleven: Cut a two-foot piece of knotting cord. On one end of the strip, center the cord through the first open hole. Work the stitches just like you did for the edges. When you get to a section of beads, take a needle off and thread the cord through the beads. Dab adhesive on the ends of the cord to help them go through the stringing holes of the beads. Put the needle back on the end of the cord, make two stitches and then add the next bead section. Ignore the perpendicular holes at this point. Continue this technique to the end of the strip.
Step twelve: Pull the ends of your cord to the back side of the bracelet. Make a knot and then weave one of the cord back through the stitches you just created. When you get to a perpendicular hole, go through the first one to the top side of the bracelet and then down through the second perpendicular hole. Weave the cord to the next section and repeat this process until you reach the opposite end of the strip. Tie a knot in your cord on the back of the bracelet, secure with fabric cement and trim.
