A Hero's Place Necklace Instructions Designed by Cheri Carlson
A Hero's Place necklace was created as a remembrance for those who died while serving in the military. This necklace is inspired from the poem "Flander's Fields," written during World War I. It features poppies, hand-stamped elements and a customizable pendant. For our pendant, we chose to use a cream background with navy images, cutout paper poppies and our hero.
Step one: To create the pendant, apply a coat of Nunn Design adhesive to the inside of the 44x51mm silver plated brass abstract heart bezel pendant. Press the first image into the frame, smoothing out any bubbles, and let dry for 20 minutes. Apply a coat of Nunn Design sealant and allow it to dry. Glue your second image over the first and apply another coat of sealant. Allow it to dry. This process will ensure that the images remain intact and free of watermarks.
Note: If you are concerned that the sealer may cause the images to bleed, try using clear packaging tape as the sealer. Simply sandwich your image between two layers of tape, smooth out any bubbles and then cut to the desired shape or size.
Step two: Use the pour spout to carefully dispense a layer of Nunn Design Gel du Soleil glaze into the pendant over the images to fill it halfway. Pop any surfaced air bubbles with a needle and place the pendant under a UV lamp for 20 minutes.
Step three: Glue the image of your hero onto the glaze and apply a layer of sealant. Allow it to dry. Pour a second layer of glaze until it is filled level with the frame. Pop any surfaced air bubbles and place under the UV lamp to cure for 20 minutes. Set aside.
Step four: Stamp the word hero onto the center of the Nunn Design antique silver-plated pewter medium circle tag link. For help with metal stamping, visit the Handy Tips section of the Learning Center. Add a 1.27 x 8mm sterling silver jump ring to each hole on the link. Set the link aside.
Step five: Stamp the phrase "mark our place" onto the Nunn Design antique silver-plated pewter large thin rectangle tag link. Add a 1.27 x 8mm jump ring to each hole on the link. Set the link aside.
Step six: Cut one 5-inch section of antique silver-plated box rollo chain and one 5 3/4-inch section of rollo chain. Find the center oval link of the 12-inch antique silver-plated small oval link chain. Hold the chain by this oval link and remove any extra links so that both ends are even. Attach a 1 x 5.8mm sterling silver open jump ring to the center oval link. Set aside.
Step seven: Link the following components to each other in the order listed: The bar piece of the Nunn Design antique silver-plated pewter leaf toggle clasp, a 5.8mm sterling silver open jump ring, the 5-inch rollo chain, the rectangle tag and the 5 3/4-inch rollo chain. Thread the pendant onto the 5 3/4-inch rollo chain. Use a 4.3mm sterling silver open jump ring to connect the bottom jump ring on the circle tag to the last link of the rollo chain. Connect the top jump ring on the circle tag to both end links of the oval link chain. Connect the jump ring on the center oval link to the circle piece of the toggle clasp.
Step eight: Thread the following onto a 2-inch head pin: a 4mm lemon opal druk bead, an 8mm sterling elegant outline bead cap and a matte ruby resin buttercup flower. Repeat for the remaining 2-inch head pin and the six 1-inch head pins.
Step nine: Attach the two flowers on the 2-inch head pins to the loop on the pendant using wrapped loops.
Step ten: Use a wrapped loop to add a flower to a 4.3mm jump ring and connect the jump ring to the rollo chain two links above the rectangular link. Use a wrapped loop to add a flower to the bottom jump ring of the rectangle tag. Do the same for the bottom jump ring of the circle tag. Use wrapped loops to connect the remaining three flowers to 4.3mm jump rings. Connect one flower to a small link on the chain just above the circle tag. Skip a link on the chain and use the jump ring on the next flower to connect two adjacent links of oval chain together. Use the jump ring on the next flower to connect the chain together again approximately 3 inches above the flower that you just added.
